A380

An homage to the prowess of the A380, the European plane par excellence, and a tribute to the men and women who devised, built, tested it and who now make it fly.

Michel Polacco is a journalist, aviator and overall plane-lover. He has directed radio station France Info since 2002 and is an editor for radio station France inter. He has authored several books, including Petites chroniques du dimanche soir with Michel Serres (Le Pommier, 2006) and Concorde (Le Cherche-Midi, 2001).
Michel Fraile, who collected all of the exceptional imagery for this title, as he did for Concorde in 2005, is also a lover of aeronautics. In addition to co-authoring Concorde, he also wrote Air France, objects du ciel and Juke-Box with Ouest-France.

Carrying more than 800 people, and up to 1000 in certain layouts, A380 is the biggest carrier in the world. Like the plane itself, its construction site in Blagnac, near Toulouse in France, is huge: the building is 500 meters (1640 feet) long and 46 meters (151 feet) high. The sole assembly line weighs 1200 metric tons and 120 laborers work there daily. The aero foil is stocked on rolling gantries attached to the factory's frame. The different parts that make up the plane are constructed all over Europe. Getting them all the way to Blagnac to be assembled often leads to some impressive scenes: barges on the Garonne River, special night convoys, etc... Once the parts have been assembled, the oversized plane moves into the finishing area for three weeks. The reactors - which represent half of the price of the plan! -are the last thing to be put on. Then come the test flights: over 2500 hours in all. Finally, it is flown off to Hamburg to have its interior installed and to be painted with the logos of any number of airline companies.
